Senior
Pets for Senior Homes www.7bellssanctuary.petfinder.com
We start
this month by offering our sympathy to several families. Jim & Becky
on the loss of Penny in an accident. Trina on the loss of Shaddow, a
kitten with kidney failure & Layla who died during a spay. R. E.
& Judy on the loss of KC, their kitty cat, in an accident. We also
mourn the loss of Susie Q. During her brief time with us she spent her
final days volunteering with Marti. They visited the local care center
& museum. She was so tiny & brought smiles to many who saw her.
A memorial tribute is on her profile on our site.
Adoptions
for April were Elle Mae & Miss Maggie. Miss Maggie waited such a
long time to find a terrific home willing to care for her chronic wound.
Miss Maggie & Elle Mae will get to visit each other often as their
guardians are friends. Queen was adopted, then returned. She now has a
new home. Red Dog was taken out of a kill shelter & reached safety
with Lynn in rescue. Jackie O, the first Lincoln city pound dog, was
saved by Aussie rescue in KC. Sonja with Nelson Rolf Memorial Animal
Shelter in Warsaw helped facilitate saving of this gorgeous Aussie mix.
Alex, Courtney, Megan were placed with SWMOK9s after their owner died.
Petey & Moses also found new homes. Their guardians followed our
suggestions about screening homes to make sure their pets were going to
a safe environment. Last, but not least, Candy Girl was PTS despite
efforts by Kim to find her a home. Kim has pulled Butch Cassidy to
safety & is still trying to find him a fur-ever home.
We are
thankful to those that helped by sending funds to our rescue, to Dr. Don
& to Dr. Jane for surgery help. Without that help, we would be
unable to care for so many. The large seniors take longer to find homes,
yet their food & maintenance continue. We are also grateful for the
garage sale items, sheets, crates, also food & medical supplies. We
are truly blessed by that generosity. One donor asked us to save cats,
thus Morris & Tigger Tanner arrived in our program. We are pleased
with the dogs that Mary has been bringing into our rescue. They all have
such a docile temperament.
We
omitted March's pet visits to the Good Samaritan Care Center in our
newsletter last month. Sorry! The dogs have spent many hours visiting in
March & April. Missy, TeddyBear, Tipi, Queen, Elle Mae, Bruce (doxie
of the Church family-he comes to spend social time, thus goes along on
visits), Spot, Savannah Spring, Lil Buddy & Bijou all visited at
various times either in March, April or both. The residents so adore
seeing pets. We are planning a Pets on Parade Spring Fashion Show in
May. It should be quite whimsical to see the pets in spring attire. We
hope to get more of our community involved with taking their personal
pets to visit the care center. Pets can be cats, dogs, hampsters,
rabbits, turtles, whatever. We must get children involved in the lives
of animals while they are young so they will grow up to be responsible
adult pet lovers. Our Halloween Fall Fashion Show was such a hoot we
were asked to return. We hope the Spring Pet Fashion Show draws more of
the local children & their pets.
We have
changed our adoption procedures in hopes to prevent any future failed
adoptions. We now keep the dogs a minimum of 2 weeks to allow recovery
from their medical care & to observe them for behavior issues, learn
their likes & dislikes. During that wait, they visit the care
center. Our foster moms are taking about a week with each dog to expose
them to different situations. Becky makes sure the dogs are child
friendly. Marti makes sure the pets become familiar with medical
equipment. TEAMwork! Together Everyone Achieves Much. Our other foster
homes are also great, just currently not able to care for a small dog.
Trina with Trina's Obedience & Behavior Modification (a link to her
on our home page) has started her obedience class. She will also
evaluate the dogs that come to our rescue. We hope to get an idea of
what each dog needs in order to match that dog with the home best suited
to care for those needs. She visited our rescue last month & made a
few suggestions. We have seen positive changes as a result of her
efforts & our work.
